Decker's family relocated from Louisiana to Georgia during the summer of 1995. She began writing songs and made frequent trips to Nashville. Looking for an agreement, she met with record labels and music publishers. Her songs were being sold to record companies and other artists through a Big Yellow Dog Records agent in her teens. The demos of Decker were heard by Mercury Records president David Massey and passed on to L.A. Reid of Island/Def Jam Group affiliated labels group L.A. Reid was able to agree Decker to a deal. Jessie James' first album entitled Jessie James and released in August 2009, was her own debut. Jessie James achieved a reasonable amount of popularity and had Wanted being able to make it into in the Top 40 charts. Decker has always considered herself as a traditional country artist however, the album's promotion and production was designed to appeal to an audience more influenced by pop. After two more singles from the album, Decker battled with label management for more control over her music, and her subsequent single Boys in the Summer was an album that was more country-oriented. The album of Decker, Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was canceled by Mercury when two of her singles did not chart on the country charts.
